Enroll

As a public charter school, Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn (Unity) is open to all New York City students. In 2018, 104 6th grade seats will be available. In addition, in 2018, there may be a number of 7th, 8th, 9th, & 10th grade seats available. Parents or guardians wishing to submit an application for their child to attend Unity may complete an application online, by mail, or in person. The school does not require any action (beyond the submission of a completed application) on the part of potential students or their families as a condition of eligibility for enrollment. The application deadline for all grades is 5pm on April 2, 2018. On April 11, an admissions lottery for all grades will be conducted at 5pm in room 230. The admissions lottery will be well publicized and will be open to the public.

To submit an application online, parents/guardians should go to unityprep.org and click on the “Apply now!” button, which is located on the main page. To submit an application in person, parents/guardians should come to Unity’s main office. To submit an application via mail, parents/guardians should download and print an application from Unity’s website, complete that printed application, then mail in the completed application to Unity at the following address:

Admissions and Enrollment Process, Including Plan for Public Lottery

Prior to Unity’s admissions lottery, a database will be generated containing the name and district of residence of every student who has submitted an application. During the lottery, an individual unaffiliated with Unity will use computer software to generate a randomized, ordered list of all students who have submitted an application. Unity will then use the ordered list to admit students in the following order:

  1. Siblings of current Unity students will be admitted in the order their name appears on the list.
  2. Students who live in Community School District (CSD) 13 will be admitted in the order that their name appears on the list.
  3. If additional seats remain, then students who live outside of CSD 13 will be admitted in the order that their name appears on the list.
  4. If there are still open seats, additional outreach will be conducted for applications.

Once a student has been admitted to Unity, parents or guardians will be notified by phone, email, and by letters sent to the residence provided in the application.  Phone calls will be made and emails and letters will be sent by the end of April 2016.  The notification will include a list of forms that need to be provided, including an original birth certificate (to verify that the student is of the appropriate age for the entering grade), academic transcript,  immunization records, and two proofs of address.  Unity only accepts the following documents as proof of address:

  • A gas or electric utility bill in the resident’s name
  • Document on letterhead from federal, state, or city agency – including City Housing
Authority or the Human Resources Administration – that states home address
  • Official payroll documentation from an employer such as a form submitted for tax
withholding purposes or a payroll receipt
  • An original lease agreement, deed, or mortgage statement for the residence
  • A current property tax bill for the residence
  • A water bill for the residence

The following forms are not acceptable as proof of address:

  • Cable bill
  • Driver’s license
  • Letter from employer
  • Medical or Insurance Card
  • Phone Bill

These forms and confirmation of enrollment must be submitted by 6th grade students by early May 2016. The admitted student is automatically guaranteed a seat at Unity for all subsequent grade levels, unless that student withdraws from the school. When all available seats have been allocated for each grade for which seats were available, students will be placed on the waiting list in the order described above. A database will be maintained containing the names, home addresses, telephone numbers, and grade levels of students who entered the lottery but did not gain admission.

Waiting List

If not all of the students selected in the April admissions lottery enroll in Unity, families on the waiting list will be contacted in the order they appear on the list. Waiting list families will be contacted as soon as a seat becomes available. Families will be contacted by phone and email and will be given 24 hours to return the call or email with intentions to accept the offered seat and enroll the student; if the family does not contact Unity within that time period, the space will be forfeited to the next applicant on the waitlist. The waitlist for each grade level will be maintained until students in that grade level graduate from 8th grade.

If, during the school year, the enrollment in any grade level falls below 90% of the maximum enrollment for that grade for that school year, families from the wait list of that grade level will be contacted to fill these vacancies.

Supplemental Application and Lottery Process

If the Head of School determines that Unity has spaces remaining available in any grade level and there are no students remaining on the wait list of that grade level, then Unity may choose to conduct a supplemental admissions and enrollment process.

If Unity chooses to conduct a supplemental admissions and enrollment process for one or more grade levels, then it will make an application available and publicly announce the application deadline. Parents or guardians wishing to submit an application for their child to attend Unity may complete an application online, by mail, or in person no later than 5:00 pm on the announced deadline. The school does not require any action (beyond the submission of a completed application) on the part of potential students or their families as a condition of eligibility for enrollment. If the number of applications for a grade exceeds the number of seats available for that grade, an admissions lottery will be conducted for that grade. The admissions lottery will be well publicized and will be open to the public. The admissions lottery will be conducted in accordance with the procedures outlined above under “Admissions and Enrollment Process, Including Plan for Public Lottery.”

Once a student has been admitted to Unity, parents or guardians will be notified by phone, email, and by letters sent to the residence provided in the application. Calls will be placed and emails and letters will be sent promptly following the lottery date, and parents or guardians will be given 24 hours to return the call or email with intentions to accept the offered seat and enroll the student; if the family does not contact Unity within that time period, the space will be forfeited to the next applicant on the waitlist. Subject to successful completion of the forms and confirmation of enrollment described above, the admitted student is automatically guaranteed a seat at Unity for all subsequent grade levels, unless that student withdraws from the school.

Students whose names are not selected from the list during the supplemental admissions lottery are placed on the Unity wait list for that grade level in the order that their names appear on the list. A database will be maintained containing the names, home addresses, telephone numbers, and grade levels of students who entered the lottery but did not gain admission.
