Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn (Unity), a grade six through twelve, tuition-free, public charter school in Brooklyn, New York, is now in its first year and serves 135 sixth graders and their families. Job Description

The joint position of Health & Fitness Teacher/Athletic Coordinator is responsible for building and promoting an active and healthy living among our students both in our physical education classes as well as our inter-scholastic athletic program. As Health & Fitness teacher, this individual creates weekly lesson plans for Unity’s physical education and health classes according to New York State Learning Standards and facilitates classes according to these plans. In addition, the Health & Fitness teacher monitors student progress toward students meeting standards and promotes students meeting such standards in a safe and engaging manner. Moreover, as Unity’s Athletic Director, this individual is charged in developing the school’s inter-scholastic athletic program. This includes but is not limited to establishing new sports teams according to student interest and well-being, creating schedules for practice and inter-scholastic competition, attending and supervising all home competitions, and ensuring exemplary sportsmanship and citizenship among all of Unity’s student-athletes. It also includes managing the school’s athletic budget, hiring and supervising coaches, and purchasing and managing all equipment and uniforms. Unity’s Health & Fitness teacher works closely with its Director of Operations in budgetary, operational, and compliance matters, the Director of Culture & Enrichment in matters pertaining to Unity’s co-curricular offerings, and the Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment in matters relating to academic eligibility.


Health & Fitness Teacher

    • Creates weekly lesson plans and objectives according to New York State Learning Standards in physical education and health education
    • Facilitates classes according to weekly plans
    • Monitors student progress in meeting objectives through regular assessments and promotes students meeting such objectives in a safe and engaging manner 

Athletic Coordinator

    • Builds and expands the school’s athletic offerings and program
    • Works with administration to enforce the policy regarding acceptable athletic conduct and academic standards in order to participate in all athletics programs
    • Creates, circulates, and manages the school’s athletic schedule including practices and competitions
    • Attends and oversees all home competitions
    • Ensures exemplary sportsmanship and citizenship among all of Unity’s student-athletes
    • Manages the athletic budget (facility rental, equipment and uniforms, awards, coach salaries, referee payments, team meals, end-of-season banquets, travel to away games, league dues and fees) and equipment inventory including uniforms
    • Hires and supervises coaches
    • Creates and maintains marketing and promotional strategies, with major emphasis on the athletics website upkeep and updates (results, statistics, newsletters, awards, and news)
    • Attends all conference meetings, if applicable, and maintains and enhances relationships with other member schools
    • Performs other related tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position 

Key Qualifications

  • A proven track record of promoting student success inside and outside of schools; at least five years of formal experience in working with adolescents
  • Demonstrably strong administrative, organizational, and classroom/course management skills
  • Familiarity with New York State Learning Standards in physical education and health
  • Expertise in working with diverse populations of students and families, and in differentiating instruction to fully support the needs of diverse learners
  • An acumen for actively engaging students in their own learning, academically and non-academically
  • A demonstrated openness and responsiveness to constructive feedback and a strong commitment to continuous improvement and professional growth
  • Strong content knowledge as demonstrated by an undergraduate or advanced degree in their respective discipline; professional experiences in their discipline is a plus
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and experience working collaboratively in team settings
  • Approaches the profession with maturity, humility, versatility (i.e., embraces the ambiguity and excitement associated with start-ups), a solutions-mindedness with a strong work ethic, and, of course, a sense of humor
