APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2025–2026 SCHOOL YEAR ARE STILL OPEN

The Unity Scoop – March 24, 2020

Dear Students and Families of Unity,

I wish to begin my note today by thanking our staff, students, and families for continuing our strong transition to remote learning.  We had over 92% of students safely engaging their classwork from home today, which is an increase from yesterday’s strong participation.

I was able to visit a few virtual classrooms this morning.  Overall, I was impressed by our teachers and their facilitation.  I was also impressed with the overall level of student engagement.  While remote teaching is still a completely new experience for us as a learning community, I am feeling very optimistic about what we can accomplish in the coming weeks.  I look forward to our ongoing collaboration with families in getting better at remote learning so that every one of our students is experiencing the best education possible.

Today’s edition of The Scoop is relatively light in new content.  See the updates below in green.  I am also continuing to include a number of reminders that remain relevant to families in being fully up-to-date on how we best support one another and our students.

As a reminder, the Daily Scoop is posted on our homepage at unityprep.org.  If you have questions, concerns, and/or ideas in response to any update, don’t hesitate to respond to this note by email.  A Unity staff member will be in touch at their earliest convenience.  Thank you to those who offered responses to updates over the past few days.

The Unity Scoop – March 23, 2020

Dear Students and Families of Unity,

I hope this note finds you and your loved ones healthy and safe as we embark on a new week together.  As of today, we are 100% remote as a full grades 6-12 school.  I am especially pleased to report that we had a student participation rate just under 90% today, which is close to our average attendance rate over the school year.  This is a remarkable accomplishment given all that we are facing as a community.  Again, I want to shout-out our staff for their continued hard work in successfully launching remote learning.  I also wish to shout-out families for your collaboration and good work in setting your children up to engage in their education from home.

In today’s edition of The Scoop, I offer updates on remote coursework and materials.  I am also continuing to include a number of reminders that remain relevant to families in being fully up-to-date on how we best support one another and our students through these challenging times.

Unity Updates – 3/19/20

Dear Students and Families of Unity,

I want to begin today’s update with a note of appreciation.  Our staff have been busy collaborating over the past two days in the preparation and distribution of materials so that our students are equipped to engage in remote learning with their teachers.  I also wish to thank our teachers and instructional leaders for their preparation over the past several days in launching remote learning at Unity.

In my discussions with fellow educators today, we all miss our students and very much look forward to reuniting in the coming days.  While learning remotely will be a new venture for us, what is familiar, and perhaps most powerful, are our relationships and willingness to trust and support one another.  In Unity, there is tremendous strength.

I have several updates for you today, including information on the first day of remote learning at our middle school and remote orientation sessions at the high school.  It is critical that all of our high school students and families are fully prepared and equipped to engage in remote schoolwork this coming Monday.  Participating in remote orientation sessions will accomplish this.  Details for tomorrow’s orientation sessions are included below.

As a reminder, The Daily Scoop will also be posted on our homepage at unityprep.org.  If you have questions, concerns, and/or ideas in response to any update, don’t hesitate to respond to this note by email.   A Unity staff member will then be in touch at their earliest convenience.  Thank you to those who offered responses to updates over the past few days.

Updates as of March 18, 2020

Dear Students and Families of Unity,

Our full staff and faculty were back in action today as we prepare to launch remote learning at Unity.  While it felt different to be engaging with each other 100% virtually, it was comforting and inspirational to reconnect with our dedicated team, roll up our sleeves, and wholeheartedly prepare to engage your child in their learning in a new way.  I anticipate the same comfort and inspiration during the first days of remote learning, when we resume our important work alongside you in providing an excellent education to your child.

We thank our families who picked up materials at our middle school or high school today.  We look forward to disseminating materials to more families tomorrow.

See the important updates below.  In addition to a number of reminders from prior Scoop editions, an update of note concerns student and family orientation.  It is critical that all of our families are fully prepared and equipped to engage in remote school work in the coming days.  Participating in a one-on-one remote orientation by phone will accomplish this.  Details for how orientations will work are included below.

As a reminder, The Daily Scoop will also be posted on our homepage at unityprep.org.  If you have questions, concerns, and/or ideas in response to any update, don’t hesitate to respond to this note by email.   A Unity staff member will then be in touch at their earliest convenience.  Thank you to those who offered responses to updates yesterday.

Unity School Closing

Dear Unity families,

We hope this message finds you well.

Unity leadership is aware of this evening’s announcement from Mayor De Blasio and Chancellor Carranza that all NYC Department of Education schools will be closed through April 20th. In light of this announcement and the evolving public health crisis we are facing, we are considering the best course of action and may very well follow suit.

An update on Unity’s school closure timeline will be provided within 24 hours. Any additional updates regarding Unity’s remote learning plans and policies will also be shared early in the week.

Breakfast and lunch will be available at every NYCDOE building (including PS44) from 7:30am – 1:30pm through grab-and-go meals tomorrow, March 16th.

We know the current state of affairs is a difficult and challenging one for all of our Unity community. We are grateful for the ability to partner with all of you to ensure that our students continue to learn and develop to their fullest potential during this difficult time.

In unity,

Josh Beauregard
