Middle School Interns at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Unity has two 8th grade students who applied and were accepted to be science interns at the BBG. Richard Molina and Aveyona Stewart completed a lengthy application process that consisted of writing essays, filling out the application, getting two teacher recommendations, and conducting an in-person interview at the gardens. They will be getting paid to help with weekend education programs for elementary aged children. Interns will then be fast-tracked for yearly paid internships with increasing responsibilities culminating in scientific research/study in HS.

Thank-you to those teachers who stepped up with great recommendations!

Congrats to our Summer Search recipients!

Please join me in congratulating the following students who were selected as Summer Search recipients:
Andre Brown
Dominik Cintron
Nigel Dickson
Franklyn Flores
Yasin Hanif
Through the program, they will work with a mentor, go on two summer challenge adventures in different parts of the country/world, support for college applications and more!

Athletic Update

Girls Basketball

Great day Unity Prep!! Last night we had a great bounce back game versus Hebrew Language. It also was the return of Kavana Goldson and Taneal Richards who kept the team steady throughout the game. Kendra Greene our captain played tremendous defense and Sunshine Saunders had an offensive explosion last night to help secure the victory.

– Coach Godfrey

Cheerleading

“Congrats to the boys and girls basketball ball team for the big WIN! I see the determination in all of the students. As for my cheerleaders, we need to step it up!  Our first competition is January 27th and we are now taking a setback from games to make sure this routine is a success. Please give us all the love and support as we go through this journey. We want to come home with that Trophy!!  Stay Tuned…..”

Boys Basketball

Second game of the season and the Panthers defense keeps proving to have more bite than purr.  The defense, lead by Hunter Johnson (8th grade), Jamal Gordon (8th grade) and paced by the scoring of Messiah Washington (8th grade), dominated the early parts of the first half. Within the first 5 minutes the team had 6 steals, and lead 12-0. Additionally, Messiah Washington lead all players with 12 rebounds. Both Johnson and Gordon contributed 7 of their own.  However, The Hebrew Language Academy battled back in the second half and challenged. HLA brought the score back to within two point, 17-15. A late minute substitution of Marquis Green-St Louis (8th grade), helped to seal the deal with a timely rebound and pass to Hunter, and made lay-up, late in the half. To top off a stellar defensive game, Johnson also had a block just minutes later to insure Unity’s victory. It marks the first below 20 opponent score of the year. “It’s one of our goals Mr. Coleman,” stated Coach Patrick. He continued, “we look to slow the game down at times with our offense, and control the glass and half-court with our defense.”

The  boy’s play next week against Excellence Boy’s at home.

Boys Basketball
January 9, 2018, marked the start of the middle school boys basketball season. For the first time, since 2017, our school hosted a home basketball game, and it was one for the ages. Led by 6th grade sensation Shaheem Cox, and anchored by 8th grade leaders, Dayshawn Pearsall and Messiah Washington, the Panther Boys roared to victory.  We would like to thank the parents, entire student, the faculty and Mr. Coleman and Coach Godfrey for the incredible support.  Our next game is here at Unity Prep, next week Tuesday January 16th.  GO PANTHERS!!!

-Coach Patrick

Girls Basketball
After our first game yesterday I was pleasantly surprised at some of the new talent that we have on the team this year.  Even though the outcome was not what we wanted last night, I have a lot to work with for the rest of the season.  We have a great blend of returning and new athletes on this team.  Coach Azinge, Ms. Harris  and I, will be working hard during practices to help improve the team during every practice.

-Coach Godfrey

Cheerleading

Tonight’s game was an absolute success! Down to the basketball teams, cheer squad and the crowd. It was a lot of support from our school. I have never seen that many people come out in a long time. The crowd had amazing energy and even participated with the cheerleading team and saying a few chants! The UNITY was definitely there tonight… The Best Is Yet To Come!!
