The Unity Scoop – April 2
Dear Families of Unity,
I hope you enjoyed the warmer temperatures this week—spring is finally here!
I want to begin by congratulating our newest Unity families who were accepted through our lottery on Wednesday afternoon. We are excited to welcome you to our community and look forward to partnering with you in the years ahead.
I also want to congratulate our high school students for completing their Quarter 3 interim assessments—an important milestone that reflects their focus, effort, and continued growth.
Finally, I’m excited to share a major milestone with our community. This past year, Unity High achieved an 84% college-going rate—one of the highest in Brooklyn and the highest among charter schools in the borough. In other words, a greater percentage of our recent Class of 2025 graduates enrolled in college this last fall than any other charter high school in Brooklyn. This is a significant accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud of our students, staff, and families—and eager to build on this momentum.
In this edition of The Unity Scoop, we highlight our middle school students preparing for state exams, student-athletes, and staff in-action,.
Wishing you a joyful and restful spring break. We look forward to coming back together as a community on April 13th!
In unity,
Josh

5. Recap – AP Seminar: College-Level Thinking in Action!
This week, our AP Seminar scholars delivered powerful, college-level presentations on complex, real-world issues—from AI and the workforce to teen mental health and pet ownership within unhoused populations—demonstrating both intellectual curiosity and a deep commitment to understanding the world.
As part of the College Board AP Seminar course, students engage in rigorous, college-style work—analyzing multiple perspectives, synthesizing research, and presenting evidence-based arguments through formal presentations and academic writing. These performance tasks are central to the AP assessment, and strong performance can lead to college credit or advanced placement in courses at many universities.
Our scholars rose to the challenge with clarity, confidence, and professionalism. We are incredibly proud of the depth of thinking and real-world connections they are building as they prepare for success beyond high school.

The Unity Scoop – March 14
Dear Families of Unity,
Thank you to our middle school families who joined us for conferences yesterday and today. These conversations are an important opportunity to reflect on student progress, celebrate accomplishments, and strengthen the partnership between school and home. We are grateful for the time you took to connect with teachers and advisors, and we deeply value the collaboration that helps ensure every student continues to grow and thrive at Unity.
High school family conferences will take place on April 16th and 17th, and we look forward to connecting with our high school families then.
In addition to conferences, we also celebrated Pi Day and all of the math magic it brings. To mark the occasion, a number of our educators volunteered to be—well—pied by our young mathematicians. We appreciate Mr. McCray (featured below) and our other fun-loving educators who made the day memorable for our students.
Looking ahead to the coming week, our Family Ambassadors will meet on Thursday evening (details below), and there will be no school on Friday in recognition of Eid al-Fitr.
In this edition of The Unity Scoop, we’re excited to share several highlights from across our community. This week, we celebrate our February Students of the Month and recognize the accomplishments of our Unity student-athletes.
Thank you for being such an important part of the Unity community. Your partnership, support, and engagement make our school stronger every day.
In unity,
Josh

The Unity Scoop – March 7
Dear Families of Unity,
I hope the first week of March has been good to you and your loved ones. With longer days and hints of warmer weather, it certainly feels like spring is beginning to make its way into the air.
In this edition of The Unity Scoop, we’re excited to share a variety of recent Unity highlights! We spotlight the creativity of our student artists, share highlights from recent field trips, and recap our welcome dinner for prospective high school students and their families. We also shout-out our Honor Roll students, recognize our February i-Ready Challenge winners, and celebrate our attendance leaders for their strong commitment to showing up and doing their best each day.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to welcome our middle school families for conferences on Thursday and Friday – see details below. In addition, spring athletics tryouts will take place on Monday and Tuesday, and we look forward to seeing many of our student-athletes out on the field and courts as the spring season gets underway.
Additionally, we recognized School Social Workers Appreciation Week this past week and took a moment to honor and appreciate our incredible social workers. On behalf of the Unity community, I extend my deepest gratitude to Ms. Del Purgatorio and Ms. Brookins for their unwavering dedication, advocacy, and support of our students and families. We are truly fortunate to have such passionate and skilled professionals strengthening our community each day.
Enjoy the weekend, and don’t forget to set your clocks forward for daylight saving time.
Here’s to the continued momentum of the semester—and to the promise of spring just around the corner.
In unity,
Josh

The Unity Scoop – January 23
Dear Families of Unity,
Congratulations to our students and team on the successful administration of our middle school English Language Arts (ELA) mock exams and high school Semester I final exams this past week. We are proud of the focus, effort, and perseverance shown across our community. As always, thank you to our families for the support you provide at home—it truly makes a difference.
Looking ahead, Unity middle school students will complete math mock exams on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and all students will begin Semester II of the 2025–26 school year. We wish all of our students continued success as they move into the next phase of their learning.
In this edition of The Scoop, we’re excited to share highlights from our recent Family Feedback Survey, spotlight our PRIDE Point Leaders from the month of December, and recognize our Student-Athletes of the Month for grades 6–8. We’re also sharing several helpful resources for families, including information about tonight’s Teen Night at the Brooklyn Museum and tomorrow’s INCLUDEnyc resource fair.
One important note: Unity is currently scheduled to be in session on Monday (1/26). Given the weather forecast and potential snowfall on Sunday, we will share an update with families on Sunday afternoon regarding Monday’s schedule.
Enjoy your weekend, and best wishes for a strong week ahead.
In unity,
Josh

3. New – Kudos to our P.R.I.D.E. Leaders as of the Month of December!
Our P.R.I.D.E. Core Values of Progress, Respect for All, Integrity, Discovery, and Empathy represent qualities that we covet as a school community. They also represent qualities that we believe empower our students to lead fulfilling lives and, therefore, qualities that we have a responsibility to actively teach and positively reinforce.
The students listed below are our leaders from the month of December, being recognized by their teachers for demonstrating our Core Values. On behalf of our school community, we are proud of these students, and look forward to continuing to shout out all of our students when they demonstrate P.R.I.D.E. in our community.

Congratulations to our most recent Student-Athletes of the Month at Unity Middle! Enjoy these recent highlights of our Panthers in action!
Astra Cabrera – Table Tennis
- Student-Athlete’s response to earning the honor: “I am very excited and grateful!”
- Coach’s praise of the student-athlete: “Astra deserves this honor because of her perseverance and honesty.”
Leon Frasier – Boys Basketball
- Student-Athlete’s response to earning the honor: “I feel happy and grateful to be on the team.”
- Coach’s praise of the student-athlete: “He has humbly led our varsity boys basketball team this school year. He also set a school record, scoring 41 points against the Brooklyn defending champions.”
Taylor Tibbs – Girls Basketball
- Student-Athlete’s response to earning the honor: “I feel very 6, 7 Alpha.”
- Coach’s praise of the student-athlete: “Taylor Tibbs is my choice for Student-Athlete of the Month for her outstanding academic performance—earning four A+ grades, one A-, and no grade lower than a B+—while also having the fewest missing assignments on the team. On the court, she has been putting in extra work, always the last to leave the gym after practice, taking shots. Very coachable, with bright energy and a willingness to learn and improve.”
Kahmora Reid – Cheerleading
- Student-Athlete’s response to earning the honor: “I feel happy because in my old school, I was never an athlete, and sports weren’t my thing.”
- Coach’s praise of the student-athlete: “Kahmora has maintained a 3.8 GPA throughout the entire season while also being a proud member of Student Government (SGA). She comes to practice every day determined to grow, remains focused, and consistently encourages her peers to put their best foot forward. Her hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed.”
