Our Story


Last year, Unity celebrated ten years of service to students and families in Brooklyn!  While this timeline captures some of the major highlights of the past decade, it is impossible to list the thousands of moments of joy we have experienced over the years.  With this foundation, we are incredibly excited about the next ten years!

  • Unity opens it doors to 140 sixth graders and their families in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn on August 28th, 2013.

  • The founding team conducts home visits with every family enrolling children at Unity.

  • Highlights from our first year:

    • First student awards distributed

    • First Roundtables Presentations

    • Extracurricular activities start

    • First college trip (Vassar College)

    • First end-of-year trip to Rye Playland

Year 1
Year 2

  • First 8th grade graduation (100% graduation rate)

  • First cohort of students earn admission to NYC’s Specialized High Schools

Year 3

  • Unity’s High School opens.

  • College and Career Readiness Program begins, featuring a grade-specific curriculum to prepare students for post-secondary path of choice, experiential learning opportunities like college trips, and a counselor for every 80 students.

  • Unity Queen Steppers, our school’s Step team, was founded and wins second place in National Step League competition.

Year 4

  • To celebrate students’ many academic achievements, Unity’s National Honor Society chapter is founded.

  • Unity partners with CUNY City Tech for College Now (dual enrollment) partnership, empowering students to earn college credits for free while attending Unity.

  • Unity joins NYCDOE’s AP For All initiative to ensure students have open access to college-level coursework while still in high school.

Year 5

  • Unity’s high school moves to 584 Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg.

  • As part of our College and Career Readiness program, we host our first College Fair.

Year 6

  • In December of 2019, Tanita Rice becomes the first Unity student to be admitted to college.

  • Unity’s first high school graduating class!

    • 99% Graduation rate.

    • 100% Post-secondary program application and admission rate.

  • The boys’ Varsity basketball team has an undefeated season.

Year 7

  • Unity hosts our first College Signing Day celebration to commemorate seniors as they announce which post-secondary schools and programs they will attend.

Year 8

  • Jordan Grant, a member of Unity’s first graduating cohort, earns an Associate’s Degree (first ever post-secondary degree in Unity history)!

  • The average overall 4-year graduation rate of Unity’s first three graduation cohorts was 94%, and 92% for students with disabilities.

Year 9

  • 95% of graduates complete at least one Advanced Placement (AP) course.

  • 76% of UPCSB graduates have matriculated to college, with a persistence rate of 85% (vs. 39% across NYC public schools).

  • Unity purchases our school building in Williamsburg.
