The Unity Scoop

Our Unity High students were out and about this week, taking advantage of exciting opportunities to explore their interests and connect classroom learning to the world around them!

Ms. Fontenot's Dance students visited the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) to experience Breaths, a dance performance exploring themes of identity, culture, and connection.

Meanwhile, Mr. O'Connell's Computer Science students visited iCapital for a Girls Who Code mentorship event. Students connected with industry mentors, participated in a hands-on technology prototyping activity, and enjoyed plenty of snacks and tacos along the way!

Experiences like these bring learning to life, exposing students to new ideas, careers, and possibilities beyond the classroom. Thank you to our teachers and community partners for making these opportunities possible!

This week, nearly 40 school leaders from Massachusetts visited Unity Middle to see our students and teachers in action! As one of only TWO middle schools across NYC selected for the visit, we were proud to open our classrooms, showcase our educational program, and share the practices that make Unity special.

A big thank-you to our students, teachers, and staff for warmly welcoming our guests and showcasing the excellent work happening at Unity every day!

What a wonderful recognition of our school community. Be proud, Unity!

Last Sunday, members of our community came together to participate in a 3-mile walk in support of The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The event raised lifesaving funds and awareness for breast cancer patients, survivors, thrivers, and caregivers. We’re so proud of our students, families, and staff for showing their Unity spirit and making a difference together!

Get ready to smile and show off your style! We have two special photo opportunities coming up for our students:

• High School: Monday, November 2 – Special Photo Day!
• Middle School: Wednesday, November 4 – School Picture Day!

Dress your best, most stylish self! We encourage all students to look and feel their best, express their individuality, and bring their Panther pride—while staying within our school's dress code guidelines, of course!

We can't wait to see those smiles, Unity!

We're excited to offer students new experiences, exposure, and opportunities to explore and deepen their interests through our growing selection of after-school clubs!

From Film, Art & Mural Making, Climbing, Kickboxing, Debate, Game Design, and Photography to many other exciting options, there's something for everyone!

These clubs are offered in addition to our athletics programs and St. Nick's after-school programming at our middle school, providing even more ways for students to learn, grow, connect, and have fun beyond the classroom.

We encourage all students and families to take advantage of these opportunities!

We’re excited to explore an opportunity for Unity students in Grades 6–12 to travel to Costa Rica during April Break 2027!

Our vision is to bring a small group of students together for an unforgettable experience exploring a new country alongside their classmates and Unity educators. Through travel, cultural immersion, and shared adventures, students would have the opportunity to broaden their perspectives, build independence, develop new friendships, and experience the world beyond Brooklyn!

We are committed to making this opportunity accessible to our families. The trip would be heavily subsidized, and participating students would have opportunities to fundraise to further reduce out-of-pocket costs.

Interested in giving your child the opportunity to experience Costa Rica with their Unity classmates and educators? Please complete our brief Costa Rica Trip Interest Survey by Friday, November 13. This survey is intended to gauge family interest and help us determine whether to move forward with planning the trip. Completing the survey does not commit your family to participating: Complete the Costa Rica Trip Interest Survey

Your feedback will help us shape our plans and explore the possibility of making this exciting adventure a reality for our students!

Our Unity Panthers were in action this week, with our High School Soccer, Middle School Cross Country, and High School Flag Football teams representing Unity with determination, teamwork, and plenty of Panther pride!

We're proud of our student-athletes for their hard work, commitment, and the spirit they bring to every competition. Keep up the great work, Panthers!

Our students and staff brought plenty of school spirit, creativity, and Panther pride to last week's festivities!

Through the Health Information Project (HIP), Unity High students serve as peer health educators, building valuable skills in leadership, communication, teaching, and mentoring while promoting health and well-being among their classmates.

The program offers meaningful experience for students considering careers in healthcare, human services, education, and mentoring.

Congratulations to our HIP student leaders on their recent participation in the HIP Leadership Summit! We're proud of their commitment to learning, leading, and making a difference in our school community!

Unity High students are hitting the road and exploring college campuses this fall! This past week, students visited SUNY Albany (see the photo below), with several returning from the experience now counting Albany among their top college choices!

It was also an exciting week for our seniors, as a number of students submitted their college applications, including Tori (below) applying to Temple University! Check out our Instagram for some heartwarming footage of these special moments!

Our recent and upcoming college visits include:

• SUNY Albany — October 27
• Skidmore College — November 19
• Hamilton College — December 3

These experiences reflect Unity's commitment to exceptional college and career preparation, helping students explore their interests, broaden their horizons, and make informed decisions about their futures. We're proud of our students as they take these exciting steps toward what's next!

Unity High recently welcomed members of the cast of the iconic television series A Different World for an unforgettable visit!

Our special guests spent time connecting with, encouraging, and inspiring our students, sharing experiences and insights about pursuing their dreams.

They also had the opportunity to shadow Principal English, gaining a firsthand appreciation for the rewards, responsibilities, and remarkable work that go into leading a school like Unity High!

It was a memorable experience filled with inspiration, laughter, and plenty of Unity pride! Check out the fun footage on social media, with much more to come! Be proud, Unity!

Thank you to all the families who joined us last Monday for our Unity High School Information Session!

We enjoyed sharing what makes the Unity Advantage so special – from our rigorous academics and exceptional college and career preparation to our athletics, clubs, supportive relationships, and exciting new opportunities.

Unity High offers the best of both worlds: the familiarity and support of the Unity community students already know, combined with the independence, opportunities, and challenges of high school.

Couldn't attend or want to revisit what we shared? We've got you covered! View the presentation slides HERE.

We look forward to continuing the conversation and helping families explore all that Unity High has to offer!

Thank you to all of our families who participated in our Family Ambassadors meeting earlier this month! It was wonderful to connect, share updates and ideas, answer questions, and discuss ways to make Unity even stronger through our partnership with families.

As a special thank-you, students of all families who participated will receive 15 PRIDE Points!

We look forward to continuing the conversation at our next Family Ambassadors meeting on Tuesday, November 10, at 6:00 PM via Zoom. All Unity families in grades 6–12 are welcome!

We’re excited to launch Unity Majors, a new program designed to connect students’ interests with their college and career aspirations! Last week, we introduced our 9th- and 10th-grade students to seven exciting pathways that will offer opportunities for specialized coursework, college credit, career credentials, and real-world experiences. Students will explore their interests before selecting a major, putting them on a path to graduate truly college- and career-ready—and with a meaningful advantage! Stay tuned for more information as the program takes shape!

Unity Middle's Quarter 1 i-Ready Challenge is underway! Students are competing by logging practice learning minutes in i-Ready Math and ELA, with prizes for top performers—including a pizza lunch, dress-down passes, and other fun surprises!

The challenge is designed to build strong learning habits, celebrate student effort, and accelerate academic growth as we wrap up the first quarter. Let’s cheer on our Panthers as they learn, grow, and earn rewards!
