The Unity Scoop – May 18

Dear Unity Families,

We hope you had a restful and joyful weekend with your loved ones.

This past week marked continued progress with end-of-year testing.  Our 8th grade students completed the NYS Science Exam, while our high school students wrapped up a demanding round of AP exams – including AP Precalculus, AP Calculus, AP English Language and Composition, AP Computer Science, and AP Environmental Science.  We are so proud of our students for their hard work, focus, and perseverance—well done!

In this week’s Unity Scoop, you’ll find:

•   Highlights of our student-leaders in action in their ELA classrooms

•   Photos from our stunning art exhibition in Williamsburg

•   A recap of our joyful College Signing Day celebration

•   A shout-out to our April Core Value Leaders

•   Details on this Thursday’s in-person Family Ambassadors Meeting

As always, thank you for being a part of our community. Here’s to a strong week ahead!

Updates as of May 18, 2025:

1. New – Highlights of Students and Their Teachers in Action This Week!: Enjoy these wonderful photos of our students and staff in action during their ELA class! Unity High students in Mr. Lazar’s AP Language class took on leadership roles as they facilitated close-reading mini-lessons on various sections of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. Kudos to our scholars for stepping up and guiding their peers through such a powerful and important text.

2. New –  Unity’s Young Artists Exhibit their Works at a Local Gallery!: This past Friday, Unity High students, staff, family members, and community members participated in an art exhibition at the Pierogi Gallery in Williamsburg. The event showcased artwork created by students in Ms. Gjakova’s and Ms. Knezevic’s art classes.  Congratulations to all of our young artists whose work was exhibited, and thank you to the families who came out to support!

3. New – Unity High Celebrates College Signing Day in Style: Unity recently celebrated our annual College Signing Day—a tradition inspired by former First Lady Michelle Obama that gives high schools the opportunity to honor seniors as they declare their postsecondary plans. The entire high school community, along with the families of our seniors, gathered in the gym for the event.

As you can see from the photos, the space was filled with excitement, pride, and joy.  Each senior gave heartfelt thanks to the family members and staff who supported them along their journey.  When students announced where they would be attending college, the room erupted in applause.  It was a truly beautiful and inspiring event!

4. New – Kudos to our P.R.I.D.E. Leaders as of the Month of April!: Our P.R.I.D.E. Core Values of Progress, Respect for All, Integrity, Discovery, and Empathy represent qualities that we covet as a school community.  They also represent qualities that we believe empower our students to lead fulfilling lives and, therefore, qualities that we have a responsibility to actively teach and positively reinforce.

The students listed below are our leaders from the month of April, being recognized by their teachers for demonstrating our Core Values.  On behalf of our school community, we are proud of these students, and look forward to continuing to shout out all of our students when they demonstrate P.R.I.D.E. in our community.
