The Unity Scoop – May 23
Dear Unity Families,
Congratulations on closing out another strong week at Unity!
Shout-out to our middle school students, who are working hard as they prepare for their end-of-year Roundtable presentations in June. Kudos to our volleyball and track teams for representing our community with pride in their competitions earlier this week—go Panthers! Thank you to our families who participated in last night’s Ambassadors meeting. And a big congratulations to our 12th graders, who celebrated their Senior Prom last night at Princess Manor in Williamsburg!
In this edition of The Unity Scoop, we spotlight our April Students of the Month. We also highlight our high school students’ interactive visit to learn about careers in orthopedics. Lastly, we share new photos from our recent art exhibition and Career Signing Day event.
I hope you and your loved ones enjoy the holiday weekend!

Updates as of May 23, 2025:
1. New – Congrats to Unity’s Students of the Month!: Kudos to our Students of the Month from April! We celebrate these students for showing exemplary scholarship and citizenship!
2. New – Unity High Students Explore Careers in Orthopedics!: This past week, a group of our high school science students had the exciting opportunity to visit New York – Presbyterian/Brooklyn Methodist Hospital to learn about the field of orthopedics. During the visit, students participated in engaging discussions and hands-on activities alongside doctors, faculty, and staff.
The experience offered valuable insight into medical careers and sparked curiosity about the science behind bone health, surgery, and rehabilitation. We’re grateful to our partners at NYP/Brooklyn Methodist for welcoming our students and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals!
3. New – Thank you, Families, for Taking Part in Last Night’s Family Ambassadors Meeting!: We are grateful to our families who participated in our recent Family Ambassadors meeting. As always, the meeting was productive, energizing, and, of course, fun! Enjoy the photos from the meeting below. Finally, thank you to Bed Stuy NEST for hosting us!
4. Updated (new photos!) – Unity’s Young Artists Exhibit their Works at a Local Gallery!: Earlier this month, Unity High students, staff, family members, and community members participated in an art exhibition at the Pierogi Gallery in Williamsburg. The event showcased artwork created by students in Ms. Gjakova’s and Ms. Knezevic’s art classes. Congratulations to all of our young artists whose work was exhibited, and thank you to the families who came out to support!
5. Updated (new photos!) – Unity High Celebrates College Signing Day in Style: Unity recently celebrated our annual College Signing Day—a tradition inspired by former First Lady Michelle Obama that gives high schools the opportunity to honor seniors as they declare their postsecondary plans. The entire high school community, along with the families of our seniors, gathered in the gym for the event.
As you can see from the photos, the space was filled with excitement, pride, and joy. Each senior gave heartfelt thanks to the family members and staff who supported them along their journey. When students announced where they would be attending college, the room erupted in applause. It was a truly beautiful and inspiring event!
6. Recap – Highlights of Students and Their Teachers in Action!: Enjoy these wonderful photos of our students and staff in action during their ELA class! Unity High students in Mr. Lazar’s AP Language class took on leadership roles as they facilitated close-reading mini-lessons on various sections of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. Kudos to our scholars for stepping up and guiding their peers through such a powerful and important text.
7. Recap – Kudos to our P.R.I.D.E. Leaders as of the Month of April!: Our P.R.I.D.E. Core Values of Progress, Respect for All, Integrity, Discovery, and Empathy represent qualities that we covet as a school community. They also represent qualities that we believe empower our students to lead fulfilling lives and, therefore, qualities that we have a responsibility to actively teach and positively reinforce.
The students listed below are our leaders from the month of April, being recognized by their teachers for demonstrating our Core Values.
